National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil College of Nursing, Ahilyanagar, was established during the academic year 2017–18 with a sanctioned strength of 50 NSS volunteers, under the guidance and approval of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a flagship youth development programme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, launched in 1969 during the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme aims to develop the personality of students through active participation in community service while fostering social responsibility, leadership, and national integration.

The NSS Unit of the college serves as an important platform for nursing students to apply their knowledge and skills in addressing community health needs while promoting the values of compassion, selfless service, and social commitment. Through regular outreach activities, students gain practical experience in community engagement and contribute to the overall well-being of society.

Aims of NSS

  • • To develop the personality of students through meaningful community service.
  • • To inculcate social responsibility, civic consciousness, and ethical values.
  • • To encourage discipline, empathy, teamwork, and voluntary service.
  • • To motivate youth to participate actively in nation-building activities.

Objectives of NSS

  • • Personality Development: Enhance leadership, communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • • Community Service: Promote active participation in health, education, environmental, and social welfare programmes.
  • • National Integration: Foster unity, harmony, and mutual respect among students from diverse backgrounds.
  • • Health Promotion: Create awareness regarding disease prevention, nutrition, sanitation, mental health, and healthy lifestyles.
  • • Environmental Protection: Encourage tree plantation, cleanliness drives, water conservation, and sustainability.
  • • Rural Development: Strengthen collaboration between educational institutions and the community.

Major Activities

The NSS Unit regularly organizes outreach and extension services:

  • • Community health surveys and health screening camps
  • • Health education and awareness programmes
  • • Blood donation camps & Organ donation campaigns
  • • Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and cleanliness drives
  • • Tree plantation & environmental conservation
  • • National health day observances & awareness rallies
  • • De-addiction and anti-tobacco campaigns
  • • Special NSS camps focusing on rural development

As per the guidelines of MUHS, Nashik, eligible NSS volunteers receive 10 additional marks, added to the aggregate marks of the final year university examination.
The NSS Unit of Dr. Vithalrao Vikhe Patil College of Nursing remains committed to nurturing socially responsible, compassionate, and professionally competent nursing graduates by promoting community participation, volunteerism, health promotion, environmental sustainability, and national service through various outreach and extension activities.
